The rapid fall of Afghanistan’s government has led to widespread fear for the safety and wellbeing of the Afghan people. One in three people now facing food insecurity crisis levels, rising inflation, and struggling health, education, and social support systems. The spread of COVID-19 and the approaching winter bring yet more complexity to meeting the needs of an already-exhausted population, within which women and children are particularly affected.
Gender-balanced, diverse humanitarian teams are essential to delivering quality, culturally sensitive, and principled aid that meets the needs of the most vulnerable Afghans. In a positive development, the Taliban has given the green light to the humanitarian community to start relief efforts to address the worsening needs.
Give2Asia is raising funds to support vulnerable populations in Afghanistan during this time of extreme uncertainty.
LOCAL PARTNERS
With almost forty years of experience working in Afghanistan, Afghanaid is staying and working hard alongside local people to deliver life-saving assistance and development projects.
One month on from the Taliban takeover and the insecurity and uncertainty are continuing to fuel a wave of internal displacement as people seek safety for themselves and their families. Many of these families are now stuck somewhere in the country, with no access to safe water, shelter, or food. The country is now in the grip of a major economic crisis. Many international donors have suspended aid, the US has frozen Afghanistan’s US Dollar reserves, and as a result, the banking system is barely functioning.
AfghanAid has now reopened nearly all of the field offices and restarted work in Kabul and in three of the four provinces where they currently have programs running. In Daykundi, Ghor, and Badakhshan, both men and women are back at work. Partner is delivering UN-funded emergency assistance and essential development work focussed on climate change adaptation and improving livelihoods.
Approximately six times the number of people in the country were already in need of humanitarian assistance in 2021 as compared to four years ago. Now, the conditions have worsened and, with winter fast approaching, the need is urgent.
Funds delivered through this campaign will support delivering emergency assistance to families who have fled their homes or lost their livelihoods in the conflict by providing:
CARE
CARE is committed to continuing support for vulnerable Afghans, particularly women and girls. In recent years, CARE worked in nine provinces of Afghanistan with programs in food security and livelihoods, health and nutrition, education, women’s empowerment, local capacity building, and gender-based violence (GBV) prevention.
CARE has exceptional acceptance in the communities where they work, and these local relationships will help facilitate the appropriate resumption of previous programming and the launch of new relief efforts. CARE has already met with the new government at the provincial and district levels, and they have provided basic assurances that will allow CARE’s programs to continue. Funds delivered will support several objectives:
