Our Mission

Founded in Cambodia in 2006, Harpswell advances young women leaders in Southeast Asia with education, training and a supportive network. We envision a new generation of women leaders who create and inspire positive social change.

The Need

In Cambodia, 32% of girls do not complete secondary education. As a result, many Cambodian women lose out on opportunities for financial independence and social leadership. In the greater ASEAN region, women represent only 1 in every 5 government representatives, and only 32% of managers.

The Solution

Harpswell seeks to bring about positive social change in Southeast Asia through the action and equal participation of women. Our strategic approach involves providing safe spaces to learn, developing leadership and critical thinking skills, and building lifelong support networks.

Our Impact

Over 350 women have graduated from Harpswell’s programs, among them Obama Foundation honorees, Knight-Hennessy scholars, Fulbright award-winners and UNHCR representatives. These women are leading in their diverse fields and communities, shaping a brighter future for Southeast Asia.

Harpswell’s core programs invest in the advancement of young women leaders in Southeast Asia. The Cambodian Women’s Leadership program offers university women the opportunity to join a residential learning community at one of our two leadership centers in Phnom Penh. The ASEAN Women’s Leadership Summit gathers women representatives from each of the ten countries in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) as well as Nepal for a two-week immersion in leadership development and professional networking. The Leadership Resident program is a volunteer program for international women to teach, mentor and collaborate with students in our Phnom Penh leadership centers for terms of 4-6 months.
