Situation Report

On July 27, a powerful 7.0 magnitude earthquake shook Abra Province in Northwestern Luzon in the Philippines. The Country’s Disaster Management Council (NDRRMC) reports that currently 48,477 people are displaced across the Cordillera and Ilocos Regions. Of that total, 90% of the evacuees are living in open spaces or staying with relatives/friends, and about 10% are hosted in 38 evacuation centers. Abra Province accounted for 98% of the total evacuees. The number of casualties confirmed is 10 deaths and 375 injuries. Thousands of houses, including 177 health facilities and more than 250 schools were severely damaged. In addition, the agriculture sector was also affected by the damage to irrigation systems, access to markets, and structures.

Immediate Needs

Immediate needs identified by our partners working on the ground include:
▪ Shelter repair kits and construction materials
▪ Clean water, food, and household items
▪ Medicines and Covid-19 PPE, especially for those living in evacuation camps
▪ Mental health and psychosocial support to communities, and especially to children
▪ Longer-term recovery and rehabilitation support

Our Partners’ Response

Caritas Manila
Caritas Manila team is responding to the quake and identified immediate needs as follows:
Food packs, Bottled water, Hygiene kits, Tents, Sleeping mats, Blankets, Solar lamps
International Institute of Rural Reconstruction 
International Institute of Rural Reconstruction’s needs assessment is in progress.

Philippine Business for Social Progress
Philippine Business for Social Progress is still identifying leading sites for support. They will assemble family packs for families camping out of their homes. Packs will contain food, tarps, mats, and blankets.

Philippine Disaster Resilience Foundation
Hygiene items are identified to be one of the most important needs on the ground. PDRF plans to provide hygiene kits to affected communities, especially those in evacuation centers who are at high risk of many infectious diseases due to prolonged stay in government evacuation centers. Each kit will contain toothbrush/ toothpaste, bath soap, face mask, sanitizer, sanitary napkins, dipper, laundry soap, shampoo.
