Our Mission

Apnalaya works with the urban poor- Enabling access to basic services, healthcare, education and livelihood; Empowering them to help themselves; and Ensuring provision of civic entitlements through advocacy with the government.

The Need

Malnutrition and disability, two major global health problems, have a strong link. All these factors increase the vulnerability to malnutrition, morbidity, developmental delay, and disability among this population. Stunting - 37.2%, underweight - 24.6%, wasting - 18.6%.

The Solution

The program seeks to break the cycle of inter-generational poor health among mothers, children, and adolescents. It seeks to improve health-seeking behavior, early identification of developmental delay and disability, build the capacities of community members, and strengthen the health system.

Our Impact

•Prevalence of underweight children reduced from 59.6% to 32% in 15 years •Immunisation for children from 12-23 months increased from 29% to 78% in 7 years • Institutional Delivery increased from 91% to 99% in 7 years • Decrease of Anaemia from 97% to 60% in 7 years • Engaged with over 2200 PwDs

Apnalya has been working on the issues of maternal and child health, nutrition, and disability since 2014, covering a population of 52,840 people across 12 slum clusters through a multi-dimensional approach. This includes action on components like nutrition-specificity, nutrition-sensitivity, and building an enabling environment as per the lancet framework. Through Apnalya’s intervention, they have effectively mobilized the community to take part in these matters and established community-level groups to generate demand for and improve access to government services. They have also established linkages with key departments of the Integrated Child Development Scheme, Public Health, and Social Welfare for improving service delivery in the area.
