Our Mission
To make a difference in the worldwide fight against leprosy, tuberculosis, and other neglected poverty-related diseases, Damien Foundation Nepal aims to enable quality healthcare through training, research, and targeted medical actions.The Need
Nepal faces challenges in the control of tuberculosis (TB), multi-drug-resistant tuberculosis, and leprosy. TB is a prominent cause of mortality among infectious diseases, both in Nepal and globally. Late diagnosis and treatment of leprosy can lead to the development of disabilities.The Solution
Damien Foundation offers technical assistance and training to healthcare workers, providing diagnostic and treatment support to TB, MDR TB, and leprosy patients. It supports TB/Leprosy Referral Centers in Nepal and ensures care for individuals affected by leprosy even after they have been cured.Our Impact
Damien Foundation has made significant contributions to the diagnosis of TB, leprosy, and MDR TB in Nepal, supporting treatment and providing socio-economic aid for patients. It continues to conduct training programs and establish referral centers for TB and leprosy.Damien Foundation Belgium Nepal Office has been active in Nepal since 2017. It provides technical assistance to the government of Nepal and works closely with federal, provincial, and local governments in the working area or districts where Damien Foundation is active.
Annually, estimated cases of TB 69,000 and Rifampicin Resistance/Multi-Drug Resistant TB ( RR/MDR TB): 2800 cases in Nepal as per the annual report of the National TB Control Center ( 2022). Nepal is a high-burden DR TB Country as per WHO Report 2021.
Nepal is among the top 23 priority countries for Grade 2 Leprosy and new case detection as per WHO Epidemiological Report, September 2021.
Nepal reported 2394 cases in the year 2021 according to Epidemiology and Disease Control Center, Ministry of Health and Population, Government of Nepal.
The government of Nepal gives high priority to TB Control. Similarly, the government of Nepal is committed to Zero Leprosy by 2030 and there is a Roadmap to Zero Leprosy endorsed by the government of Nepal. However, to end both TB and Leprosy, there is still a long way to go. There is a resource gap to continue to fight those diseases more intensely and more effectively. Hence, there is a continuous need for development partners and INGOs to provide technical support and development assistance to Nepal to fight both diseases.
